Virginia schools reaped significant rewards as the sale of Mega Millions tickets soared during the jackpot ascent.
The Friday, Jan. 13 draw saw the Virginia Lottery unveil its figures, revealing a sole winner for the whopping $1.348 billion jackpot. Remarkably, a lucky player hailing from Maine emerged as the second-highest jackpot victor ever recorded in the game’s history.
According to the state lottery, Virginia experienced a number of winners on January 13th alone.
- In Virginia, a total of 201,739 Mega Millions tickets secured prizes varying from $2 to $10,000.
- The winning ticket that matched four out of the first five numbers along with the Mega Ball number was sold at the Limestone Drive 7-Eleven in Gainesville, VA, earning the lucky winner a prize of $10,000.
The Mega Millions draws take place on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m., resulting in a total of 26 drawings that contributed to the jackpot. This extraordinary jackpot run commenced in October and concluded on an auspicious Friday the 13th in Maine.
Within that specific time frame, the sale of Virginia Mega Millions tickets resulted in an approximate profit of $28.9 million, which is allocated towards K-12 public education funding. Lottery items are available for purchase at over 5,300 retail locations throughout the state.

The Literary Fund receives all unclaimed Virginia Lottery prizes, utilizing the funds to offer low-interest loans for:

In FY 2022, the Literary Fund received a sum of $17.1 million from the Lottery. Over the course of many years, starting from 1988, the Literary Fund has accumulated an impressive total of over $337 million from unclaimed prizes.
For Friday night’s drawing, the Mega Millions jackpot has returned to its initial base of $20 million.
The Powerball now offers a larger prize, with a staggering $473 million jackpot up for grabs in this Saturday night’s drawing.
