Sports betting has resulted in the suspension of five NFL players, including Shaka Toney, a Defensive End for the Washington Commanders. Toney’s suspension is without a set duration, but he has the option to seek reinstatement into the league after a year.
Five players suspended for violating NFL rules
A collective of five players, with four belonging to the Detroit Lions, were suspended in total.
- Jameson Williams, a wide receiver for the Lions, has played in six games.
- Stanley Berryhill, the wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, has played in six games.
- Lions wide receiver, Quintez Cephus, faces an indefinite period of uncertainty.
- C.J. Moore, Lions Safety, status: indefinite.
- Commander Shaka Toney’s term is indefinite.
Cephus and Moore were both let go by Detroit.
ESPN reported that the NFL investigation yielded no evidence suggesting the use of insider information for placing bets. Furthermore, there was no indication that the players involved in the betting had compromised any NFL games.
A statement was released by The Commanders.
Upon receiving notice, we have wholeheartedly cooperated with the NFL’s investigation and fully endorse the league’s findings and subsequent actions. For any additional queries regarding this matter, please kindly redirect them to the NFL League Office.
However, the reason behind the two players receiving a mere six-game punishment while the others faced indefinite suspensions is unclear. This discrepancy can be attributed to the fact that their violations were distinct. Cephus, Moore, and Toney were found guilty of engaging in betting activities related to NFL games, which is regarded as the league’s primary concern.
Six-game suspensions were given to Williams and Berryhill after they were caught placing bets on mobile devices while at the Lions’ Allen Park headquarters and training facility. It is important to note that their bets were not related to NFL games. While NFL players have the freedom to bet on sports outside of their own league, certain restrictions apply regarding the timing and location of such activities.
NFL gambling policy
The NFL has strict rules in place that prohibit any involvement of league players and staff in betting on NFL games, the NFL draft, or any other activities associated with the league. Moreover, players are not allowed to place bets while present at a team facility or when traveling for NFL-related reasons.
The NFL aims to prevent any corruption linked to gambling by implementing these policies. With the rapid expansion of sports betting, it is crucial for leagues and their governing bodies to treat gambling-related policies with utmost importance, according to Brad Holmes, the GM of the Detroit Lions.
After conducting an NFL investigation, we have discovered that some of our players have breached the league’s gambling policy. The actions of these players do not align with our organizational values and go against the league’s regulations. Consequently, we have chosen to immediately terminate our association with Quintez and C.J. We are disheartened by the poor judgment displayed by Stanley and Jameson, and we will collaborate with them to ensure they comprehend the gravity of these violations and have a clear understanding of the league’s rules going forward.
Williams and Berryhill are allowed to continue participating in team activities, such as training camp, and can still practice. However, they will only be able to play in regular season games starting from Week 7.
Jameson Williams apologizes for betting in Lions team facility
In the 2022 NFL Draft, Jameson Williams was selected as the 12th overall pick. The talented wide receiver joined the Lions for his rookie season and managed to make a notable impact. Despite playing in only six games due to a lengthy rehabilitation process following an ACL tear, Jameson showcased his potential by securing a single reception for 41 yards, resulting in a touchdown. It’s worth mentioning that the injury occurred during his tenure at Alabama while competing in the College Football Playoff championship.
Following his suspension, William’s representation released a statement.
“Jameson assumes complete accountability for his actions and expresses deep regret to the NFL, his teammates, and the fans and city of Detroit,” Alliance Sports stated. “Nevertheless, it is crucial to emphasize that Jameson’s transgression did not involve wagering on football, but rather resulted from a technical regulation regarding the specific location where the online bet was made — a practice that is ordinarily permitted by the NFL outside of the team’s premises. Jameson would never knowingly compromise the integrity of the game he holds dear and eagerly anticipates rejoining his team at the earliest opportunity.”
