While tuning into a professional sporting event on TV in Virginia, it is possible that you may come across an increased number of responsible sports betting advertisements.

The Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising was formed by the leading sports leagues in North America, along with the participation of FOX and NBCUniversal.

The NFL, NBA, WNBA, NHL, NASCAR, and MLS have united their efforts to address the issue of problematic sports betting advertisements. This coalition’s work will contribute an additional perspective to the responsible gambling resources in Virginia.

The coalition emphasizes the importance of setting guidelines for advertising sports betting as it becomes legal across the country. According to a statement from the coalition, every member believes in the responsibility of directing sports betting ads towards the right audience and delivering the message with careful consideration and precision.

Responsible sports betting advertisements are the goal

The coalition has committed to implementing six distinct enhancements:

  • The marketing of sports betting should be exclusively targeted towards adults who have reached the legal betting age.
  • The promotion of betting should refrain from encouraging irresponsible or excessive gambling, as well as avoiding any degradation of the consumer experience.
  • Misleading advertisements related to sports betting ought to be avoided.
  • Advertisements for sports betting should adhere to high standards of decency.
  • Sports betting advertisements should undergo suitable internal reviews by publishers.
  • Consumer complaints concerning sports betting advertising should be reviewed by publishers.

MLB Executive Vice President of Media & Business Development Kenny Gersh emphasized the need to be cautious and intentional in the presentation and targeting of sports betting options, while also acknowledging the importance of offering new fan engagement opportunities in various forms.

Tackling the topic of ‘free bets’ and implementing publisher review

While the majority of the goals are clear and easy to understand, it is crucial to emphasize a few key terms.

The concept of “free” bets as part of sportsbook promotions has generated a lot of discussion, and the coalition aims to inform potential bettors about the associated risks.

The statement asserts that sports betting advertisements and marketing must refrain from promoting unrealistic financial gains or implying that participating in sports betting guarantees social, financial, or personal success.

Furthermore, it is noteworthy to mention the coalition’s commitment to engaging with consumers. Alongside implementing an ad review procedure, the coalition emphasizes the need for publishers to establish a mechanism for addressing and considering complaints from users.

The statement suggests that publishers displaying sports betting advertisements need to establish and execute a system for examining consumer complaints regarding the advertising.

The review process was not discussed in detail by the coalition. Nevertheless, Gersh emphasized that it is a collaborative endeavor that necessitates careful planning.

Gersh stated that combining the coalition’s efforts in the advertising field with our initiatives to advocate responsible gambling and tackle problem gambling issues will result in enhanced strategic planning and execution across all aspects.

Virginia is no stranger to responsible betting advertisements

In March, the Virginia Lottery unveiled a creative advertisement to promote responsible gambling. Emphasizing the theme of alienation, the lottery concentrated its campaign efforts on National Problem Gambling Awareness Month.

In the PSA video, a man wearing an alien costume expressed how he felt disconnected from himself while gambling, describing it as an experience of becoming alien.

It’s amusing to imagine an alien observing a sports event alongside humans in a living room. However, the lottery’s focus is a matter of great importance.

According to the Virginia Lottery, problem gambling encompasses actions that undermine, disturb, or harm one’s personal, family, or professional endeavors.

The coalition says its efforts are ‘fundamental’

The legality of sports betting is currently upheld in 33 states, which includes Virginia and Washington D.C., and this number is expected to rise in the future.

With the increasing popularity of sports betting, its exposure also surges. A fierce competition among operators for customers emerges, resulting in a proliferation of advertisements in diverse formats.

The coalition firmly believes that their fight is crucial as a result of this.

“The NBA and WNBA’s head of gaming and new business ventures, Scott Kaufman-Ross, stated that these essential initiatives will play a significant role in establishing a secure, enjoyable, and enduring market for sports enthusiasts to participate in legalized sports betting.”
