No Virginia Powerball Billionaire, But Check Your Tickets Anyway

Written By Russ Mitchell on November 9, 2022
We don't live next door to a Virginia Powerball billionaire. The $2.04 billion ticket was sold in California.

Despite being on the opposite coast, Virginia Powerball players missed out on the opportunity to claim the astonishing $2.04 billion jackpot. Nevertheless, it is still advisable for everyone, regardless of whether they are a Virginia Powerball billionaire or not, to check their tickets for smaller prizes.

  • On November 7th, the white ball numbers that emerged victorious were 10, 33, 41, 47, and 56.
  • The Powerball with the color red had a value of 10.

In the foothills northeast of Los Angeles lies the town of Altadena, CA, where a ticket was sold and managed to match all six numbers.

In terms of geography, Virginia players were far from securing the victory. However, according to the Virginia Lottery, a few local VA Powerball numbers came close to winning. The lottery provided the following information in a 4 p.m. update on Tuesday.

Despite the fact that the winning ticket for the record-breaking Powerball drawing was not purchased in Virginia, the Commonwealth still reaped the benefits of the event. Throughout the course of the 41 drawings leading up to the monumental $2.04 billion jackpot on Tuesday morning, the sales of Powerball tickets in Virginia produced an approximate profit of $42.3 million. It is important to note that, in accordance with the law, the entirety of this profit is allocated towards K-12 public education.

Winning at Powerball is a challenging feat, with the odds of securing a prize standing at approximately 1-in-25. However, the immense magnitude of the mega-jackpot resulted in hundreds of thousands of fortunate Virginians emerging as winners.

A total of over 303,000 Powerball tickets purchased in Virginia were winners in the Nov. 7 drawing. The prizes varied from $4 to $100,000, with one ticket claiming the top prize of $100,000, and three tickets receiving $50,000 each in Monday’s draw.

In Madison Heights, the South Amherst Highway Smile Gas station was where the fortunate ticket worth $100,000 was purchased.

The winning tickets, each worth $50,000, were purchased at:

  • The Publix supermarket located on Monticello Avenue in Williamsburg.
  • the Hampton North Armistead 7-Eleven is located in Hampton.
  • The East Main Street Wytheville Go-Mart.

Players lost sleep over Virginia Powerball Billionaire dreams

People in Virginia who stayed up on Monday night were disappointed as the Powerball draw was delayed by nearly 10 hours due to a security protocol breach in one of the game’s 48 jurisdictions. It is necessary for all jurisdictions to adhere to the standards before the drawing can take place.

Some individuals accused faulty machines, while others speculated about a conspiracy involving the Multi-State Lottery Association, as Twitter users shared their opinions.

The Land of 10,000 Lakes, in reality, made a significant error. The Minnesota Lottery took responsibility for the delay, explaining that the state’s sales verification system caused frustration for sleepless Virginians, who now had a reason to be upset.

After winning the $2.04 billion jackpot, the lucky winner from California has the choice to receive a cash prize amounting to $997.6 million. However, it is important to note that once they opt for this option, they will be subject to California tax rates.

The Powerball’s jackpot returns to its initial amount of $20 million.

On Election Night, a group of players from Virginia eagerly turned their attention towards Mega Millions, as the draw for a $154 million jackpot was just a few hours away. Hopefully, luck will be on their side!
