Although sports betting in Virginia may have experienced a decline on a monthly basis, the most recent data provided by the Virginia Lottery suggests a significant increase when compared to the previous year.
In February, Virginia residents collectively placed bets amounting to $433.8 million, as reported by the lottery. During this month, the Kansas City Chiefs emerged victorious over the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl, while bettors managed to win slightly over $394 million. After accounting for bonuses, promotions, and various deductions, Virginia’s adjusted gross revenue for the month amounted to $28.4 million.
It is no surprise that online sports betting remains highly popular in Virginia. In February, a staggering 99.2% of all bets were made through VA sports betting apps. This implies that only $3.6 million out of the total bets for the month were made in physical casino locations.
Super Bowl betting brought in more than $32 million
Throughout history, the Super Bowl has consistently held its position as one of the most prominent sports betting occasions in North America. The year 2025 was no exception, as citizens of the United States relished the exhilarating triumph of the Kansas City Chiefs, who secured a thrilling 38-35 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles.
In Virginia alone, approximately $32.3 million was wagered on the major game.
It is no wonder that experts predicted this year’s Super Bowl to attract a record-breaking number of wagers, as sports betting has become legal in 33 states. This increased accessibility has made it easier than ever for fans to place their bets.
Virginia, a state where mobile sports betting reigns supreme, currently boasts 15 legal sportsbooks. This count is bound to increase with the recent acquisition of a sports betting license by Betr.
Virginia sports betting roughly $4.7 million in taxes in February
According to Virginia law, the General Fund receives 97.5% of the state’s adjusted gross revenue generated from sports betting, while the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund receives the remaining 2.5%.
In February, Virginia collected approximately $4.7 million in taxes due to the net positive adjusted gross revenue reported by nine sportsbook operators.
The allocation from the General Fund amounted to approximately $4.6 million, while the remaining $117,053.12 was allocated to the state’s Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund.
VA sports betting handle dropped month-to-month, but up from 2022
Virginians bet approximately $513.15 million on sports in January, but the numbers dropped significantly to around $80 million in February.
Although it may appear disheartening, this outcome is somewhat predictable. The majority of states experience a surge in betting activity during the peak football season, with bettors placing ample wagers on the NFL and college football. However, in February, there was only a single football event available for betting.
In February 2022, Virginia’s sports betting handle reached slightly above $400 million, marking a 7.9% increase compared to the same month in the preceding year.
Several factors have contributed to reaching this point, including increased accessibility to sportsbooks and the availability of more mobile apps for betting. This development signifies a positive outlook for Virginia’s overall industry and represents a logical progression.
Be on the lookout for March’s sports betting figures
Similar to the Super Bowl, the NCAA Tournament also attracts a significant number of bets, resulting in an increase in betting activity.
In the previous year, approximately $470 million was bet by Virginia residents during March Madness. This marked the second-highest amount wagered in a single month since the initiation of legal sports betting in Virginia for a 15-month period. Consequently, an adjusted gross revenue of around $33.7 million was generated.
It should be mentioned that Virginia housed only 12 sportsbook operators at this exact time last year.
Just a friendly reminder, it is not permissible for Virginia residents to place bets on college basketball programs that are based within the state. Therefore, residents were unable to place any bets on the Virginia Cavaliers or the VCU Rams during this year’s March Madness tournament. However, they were still able to place wagers on all the other teams participating in the tournament.
We are now eagerly awaiting the total amount of bets placed by Virginia bettors on the NCAA Tournament.
