World Cup odds favor Europe, South America as always

Teams from South America and Europe have consistently had the highest chances of winning the World Cup. This trend is not without reason, as all of the first and second-place teams since the tournament’s inception in 1930 have hailed from these two continents.

We won’t see DC United players in Qatar

At the 2022 World Cup, 36 players from MLS teams have been chosen to represent 22 out of the 32 nations participating. Unfortunately, none of the players from DC United will have the opportunity to represent their respective countries at this international event.

  • There are six players from CF Montréal on the Team Canada roster.
  • LAFC is sending a total of five players to the World Cup, with three of them representing Ecuador.
  • Completing the list of top clubs, the Seattle Sounders FC proudly contributes four players who are currently on their way to Qatar.
  • Toronto FC and Nashville SC are among the MLS teams that have multiple players competing in the World Cup. Toronto FC has three players representing their team, while Nashville SC has two.

Bets on football and fútbol: A winter of World Cup isn’t typical

Your mind isn’t deceiving you. It’s uncommon for World Cup odds to be on our holiday wish lists. Typically, World Cups take place in June and July, spanning across various locations worldwide.

Why so late?

Qatar achieved a groundbreaking feat as the inaugural Middle Eastern nation and the tiniest country ever to secure a World Cup bid, a decision that stirred controversy due to various factors, such as the climate.

During the months of June and July, when the World Cup is typically held, temperatures consistently exceed 105ºF, making on-field conditions even more intolerable. Consequently, it was deemed unsafe to host the World Cup during these scorching summer months.

Similar to the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, Qatar is also transitioning into winter. Consequently, the conditions for the group stage appear to be consistently favorable. On match days, Team USA can expect temperatures to reach approximately 85ºF, with lows around 70ºF.

A bigger World Cup is coming to North America in 2026

On July 19, 2025, the 2025 MLS All-Star Game will be held at Audi Field, hosted by DC United. However, it is important to note that Washington, DC will not be among the host cities for the 2026 World Cup, which is jointly hosted by Canada, the US, and Mexico. This historic event marks the first time that three countries are sharing the prestigious honor.

  1. Vancouver
  2. Seattle
  3. San Francisco
  4. Los Angeles
  5. Guadalajara
  6. Kansas City
  7. Dallas
  8. Atlanta
  9. Houston
  10. Monterrey
  11. Mexico City
  12. Toronto
  13. Boston
  14. Philadelphia
  15. Miami
  16. New York/New Jersey

In 2026, the World Cup will undergo an expansion to accommodate 48 national teams, a significant increase from the 32 teams participating in Qatar. Moreover, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will feature a total of 64 matches. However, to determine the champion in 2026, FIFA will require a staggering 80 matches.

The 2026 World Cup guarantees the US, Canada, and Mexico spots as hosts.
